"I don't know, I like Bucky as Cap, but I loved the Winter Soldier.
I like the idea that if Steve does come back, Bucky will remain the Winter Soldier, and Steve will remain Cap, then they fight side by side.
And if Steve doesn't then Bucky will remain Cap.
    Main thing here is:
Steve comes back: Bucky will return as Winter Soldier, but with a new thing, like American Soldier...
Doesn't: I like Bucky as the new Cap, it's starting a turning point in Marvel, if Steve doesn't come back, then Bucky will remain the Captain America."- Vic "The Iceman" Beckles..

    EDUCATION: High school dropout
FIRST APPEARANCE: Captain America Comics #1 (1941)
HISTORY: Separated from his sister following their parents' deaths, James Barnes became a teenage ward of the state assigned to Camp Lehigh in Virginia, where he served as camp mascot and set up a profitable endeavor providing soldiers with various non-requisition supplies. His mother had died when he was a young child; his father had died in an accident while in basic training at Camp Lehigh. He befriended a seemingly naive young private, Steve Rogers, who had recently become the government operative Captain America. One night, Barnes discovered Rogers changing into his costumed identity; sworn to secrecy, Barnes assisted Captain America on a mission against the Red Skull and was given government approval to undergo intensive training to serve as Cap's partner Bucky, in part to counter Germany's Hitler Youth movement. Not long after this, Bucky joined forces with the mutant hero Toro and four young adventurers as the Young Allies. Bucky divided his time between missions with Cap and less formal adventures with his fellow teens.
When America entered World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Captain America and Bucky abandoned their military identities for most of the war to devote their full energies to serving as costumes freedom fighters. Captain America and Bucky allied with Toro, his partner the android Human Torch, and Namor the Sub-Mariner to form the team of superhuman freedom fighters called the Invaders; in early 1942, Bucky was also instrumental in organizing the super-teams known as the Liberty Legion and the Kid Commandos. In addition to their work with the Invaders, Cap and Bucky continued to both share missions and embark on solo adventures.
In late 1945, as the war neared its end, Captain America and Bucky were in London, England, trailing Nazi scientist Baron Zemo; they discovered him stealing an experimental drone plane and confronted him, but were incapacitated by Zemo's android. Zemo strapped the pair to the drone plane, intending to fly them to Germany, but they escaped just before Zemo activated the plane, which departed without them. Pursuing on a motorcycle, the pair leaped for the plane as it flew out of range. Bucky caught hold of the plane's wing and discovered a bomb placed upon it as a booby trap; ignoring Cap's warnings, Bucky attempted to defuse the bomb, but the plane exploded, apparently killing him. Bucky's remains were never recovered, and Captain America was subsequently thrown into suspended animation, reviving decades later to avenge Bucky's death and ensure that his sacrifice received the recognition it deserved.
After the disappearance of Captain America and the apparent death of Bucky towards the end of World War II in Europe, the costumed adventurer called the Spirit of '76 assumed the role of Captain America. A boy named Fred Davis, who had once aided the original Bucky, became the second Bucky and the partner of this new Captain America. Both the second Bucky and the second Captain America served as members of the postwar All-Winners Squad. Davis's subsequent history is as yet unrecovered. Jack Monroe became the third Bucky, who was the partner of the fourth Captain America in the 1950s. The latest Bucky is the costumed adventurer called Nomad.
When Bucky fell into the water he was preserved by the freezing waters, Bucky was retrieved by Vasily Karpov's submarine and taken to Soviet authorities in May 1945. Barnes was thawed out and pronounced legally deceased, but doctors revived him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and adrenaline injections to his heart, although Barnes suffered considerable brain damage and had no knowledge of his previous life besides reflex memories. When the Soviets determined he had no super-soldier formula in his system, Barnes was placed in stasis. In June 1954, a K.G.B. spy within Britain's MI-6 obtained schematics for a robotic appendage that was reproduced and used to replace Barnes's missing left arm. Planning to turn Barnes back on the Americans, the Soviet government cleared Department X to begin Project: Winter Soldier. Barnes was reprogrammed with mental implantation during sensory deprivation; sent out to conduct several strategic assassinations for the K.G.B. throughout the mid-20th century including assassinating James Howlett's (later Wolverine) wife Itsu (who was carrying Howlett's unborn child); and placed in stasis between missions to slow his aging.
Upon Karpov's death nearly 20 years ago, Barnes remained in stasis due to mental instability and was placed in a storage facility inherited by Karpov's protégé General Aleksander Lukin, who went rogue after the Soviet Union's fall and formed the Kronas Oil Corporation. Coveting the Red Skull's Cosmic Cube, Lukin reactivated Barnes and had him assassinate the Skull, although Barnes did not realize that the Skull had simultaneously used the Cube to transfer his consciousness into Lukin's body. Barnes next assassinated Jack Munroe (Nomad, the former 1950’s "Bucky") and framed him for the Skull's assassination. Barnes then detonated a fire bomb in Philadelphia that helped Lukin power the Cosmic Cube; but when Lukin discovered the Cube's negative side-effects, he sent Barnes to take it to a nuclear-safe vault in West Virginia, causing Barnes to question his orders for the first time. Learning the Winter Soldier's true identity, Captain America used the Cosmic Cube to restore his memories, causing Barnes to turn against Lukin and go underground.
Barnes next resurfaced in Belgrade, Serbia where he was confronted by Wolverine, who had recently regained the memories of his wife's assassination. Barnes then appeared in London, England, where Lukin unleashed Red Skull's Sleeper robot. Barnes teamed with Captain America to defeat the robot, which vaporized his cybernetic arm in the process. After the battle, Barnes disappeared, headed toward France and making arrangements with Nick Fury to obtain a new arm. Barnes has most recently resurfaced in America working with Nick Fury as an undercover operative.

  • Captain America #600On the first anniversary of the death of Captain America there is a dispute between people, whether to honor him as a patriot, or hate him for being a traitor. Sharon Carter is also looking for the agent to whom she gave the gun she used to kill Steve Rogers. She tracks him down, and using a device from Nick Fury, she hypnotizes him and makes him tell her where he put the gun.
As "Bucky Cap" reflects on what's happening to the country, Rick Barnes (the son of Bucky Barnes)talks with Eli Bradley (aka Patriot), telling him that he wants to be his father's new partner. Patriot says that Bucky is not looking for a new partner right now, but he wants Rick to meet him, like Steve would have wanted him to. Meanwhile, Crossbones and Sin escape from a H.A.M.M.E.R. holding facility in Colorado, and the Red Skull returns, still trapped in his robot body. In Central Park, Falcon, Natasha, Bucky, Luke Cage, Jessica Drew, and Clint Barton are there without their costumes, but have a teleportation spell ready in case Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers attempt to capture them. Osborn, Sentry and the new Ms. Marvel manage to find the group while hovering over the park, but Osborn decides not to attack them. Instead, Osborn appears in front of the crowd, and says that the gathering, thought to be illegal, was approved by H.A.M.M.E.R. He declares that they will honor Captain America for who he was, and the crowd shouts his name, which upsets the Avengers present. Sharon Carter then appears to them, saying that there is still a way to save Steve, and that she is pregnant, and having a baby boy.[3]

    Prelude

At the H.A.M.M.E.R. holding facility in Colorado, Sin is questioned about a second shooter besides Crossbones in the murder of Captain America. They promise her freedom in exchange for the shooter, figuring that since the Red Skull is dead, she does not need to be loyal to him anymore. Sin laughs at this, and tackles the H.A.M.M.E.R agent, whispering something in his ear. She is about to escape when Bullseye captures her. Later, Bullseye and Norman Osborn are talking with the agent Sin attacked, and he says that she whispered "Why are you sure he is dead?". Osborn declares that is a problem, but the question is whether she was talking about her father, or about Captain America.[4]

    Reborn

Sharon, Falcon, Vision, and Hank Pym are meeting together at Hank's lab. While Bucky and Black Widow (who become lovers) infiltrate a H.A.M.M.E.R. helicarrier, Sharon explains to everyone how she shot Captain America. However, when they examine the gun, which she recovered in Captain America #600, they discover that it is technology sponsored by none other than Doctor Doom. The gun didn't kill Steve, but as Zola explains to Osborn during a meeting, "froze him within space and time", and while Sharon was captured by Red Skull, she was used as part of a device to bring Steve back, or "unstick" him from time. When she damaged the machine, Steve did become "unstuck," however, no one is sure where. As Bucky and Widow are attacked by Ares and Venom, there are flashbacks to Steve Rogers, who appears on D-Day, his mother's death, and then back in D-Day with Bucky from that time. He questions what is happening to him, but appears to prepare to go along with where he is, and fight the battles of World War II all over again.[5]
Norman Osborn approaches Sin and Crossbones for a mission. Captain America then ends up in the point of time where he is subjected to the Super Soldier serum by Dr. Abraham Erskine. Meanwhile, Bucky and Black Widow have been apprehended by H.A.M.M.E.R. Agents. Norman Osborn then advises Black Widow to seek out Sharon Carter and order her to turn herself in before the current Captain America is also killed.[6]
Captain America is now in the event in his life where the Inuit have found his frozen body and then flashes toward the Kree-Skrull War event where he is able to briefly talk with the Vision, giving him a message that he is to subsequently forget until the right time. Back in the present, Bucky is freed by Ant-Man and then rescued by Falcon who fights Ghost. However, Sharon has turned herself in. Meanwhile, Sin and Crossbones locate the Red Skull and take him to Latveria so that he could be given a living body.[7]
When Red Skull arrives in Latveria with Sin and Crossbones, Arnim Zola has created a machine that will bring Captain America back. Captain America is now in the point in time where he and Rick Jones (under his Bucky alias) are fighting HYDRA. Back in the present, Norman Osborn holds a press conference about Sharon's surrender as it is watched on the airplane where Victoria Hand has Sharon. At the Infinite Avengers Mansion, Mister Fantastic reveals to Henry Pym that the gun used to shoot Captain America used tachyon particles and the unidentified nano-particles in her blood are linked. He also theorizes that Captain America's body is somehow out-of-sync with their reality, which is why Sharon is the key to bringing him back. The Vision interrupts them, Reed's comment having activated a secret message in his deep storage memory banks from Captain America himself. Ronin, Black Widow, and Bucky attack H.A.M.M.E.R. Mobile Data Collector demanding the whereabouts of Sharon. Once Vision shows the message to the two scientists, Mister Fantastic deduces that when Sharon destroyed the Skull's machine, it caused Rogers to be lost in time. Sharon is brought into Latveria and hooked up to the machine that she previously destroyed where she will be hooked up to that machine alongside the Red Skull. In 1945 at the English Channel Islands, Captain America and Bucky attempt to stop the Nazis and Baron Heinrich Zemo from moving the drone plane armed with an explosive. Captain America realizes that this is the same event at which they both get frozen and his sidekick becomes the Winter Soldier. Then suddenly, he is pulled through his entire life before the Red Skull comes on top of him. By then, his physical form is brought back to its proper reality. However, it is not Steve Rogers who is in control, but the Red Skull.[8]
Aboard the A.I.M. transport ship, Sharon tries reaching out to Steve Rogers telling him to not "let him win". Captain America responds by kicking her in the face. When Sharon argues that it is Norman Osborn that is "pulling the strings", Captain America responds by telling her that Norman Osborn has gone to great lengths for him, even striking a political deal with Doctor Doom and that he would be following Osborn's plan...for now. Captain America then informs that they will be meeting with the President to inform him on Captain America's return, right after he takes care of Avengers who have been tailing them in stealth for the last hour. Immediately the Vision phases through the Transports walls but is quickly frozen by Sin using a new weapon developed by Zola and A.I.M. The Avenger's Quinjet is then shot down, crashing in Washington D.C.'s Reflecting Pool. The A.I.M. transport lands and a battle then ensues between the Avengers and the A.I.M. agents. The real Steve Rogers is now stuck in an alternate New York, one run by the Red Skull. After being discovered by Nazi soldiers, Steve escapes down a dark alley where he finds Uncle Sam posters, refashioned in the image of the Red Skull. Steve Rogers punches through the wall, where he catches the Red Skull off guard, and the two fight. Aboard the transport ship, the Red Skull-controlled Captain America becomes disorientated from the mental attack of Steve Rogers. Captain America then informs Zola to release the shock troops: the Super M.O.D.O.K. Squadron (Military Organisms Designed Only for Killing Super Heroes) led by Crossbones. Bucky spots Captain America and Sin emerging from the transport. Sin charges towards Bucky only to be knocked away by Bucky's shield. Upon the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Captain America and Bucky fight while Steve Rogers and the Red Skull fight in the alternate New York. As they fight, the Red Skull reveals to Steve Rogers that it was, in fact, Sharon who had assassinated him, but Steve Rogers passes it off as a lie. Sin then shoots Bucky in the back from point-blank range before Captain America takes the shield. Bucky draws his gun, with Captain America daring him to shoot. Bucky tries to reach out for Steve to give him a sign, but in his hesitation has his bionic arm cut off at the wrist. Captain America takes Bucky by throat and prepares to strike him, but Bucky overcomes him and win the fight.[9]
During the battle, Henry Pym enters the Red Skull's ship and frees Sharon Carter. Meanwhile, Rogers, determined to stop the Skull at all costs, tackles the representation of the his enemy's consciousness and began to strangle him. Surprised that Rogers would go that far, the Red Skull consciousness evacuates Rogers' body, allowing Rogers to reassert control. The Red Skull returns to his robot body, just as Pym and Carter stop Arnim Zola from hacking into Vision's operating system. To prevent him from escaping the area, Sharon Carter uses Pym's size changing technology to enlarge the Red Skull into a giant. While Rogers leads the Avengers into a coordinated attack on the giant menace and thus holding him in place, Vision accesses the ship's weapons systems to fire on the Red Skull. As the Skull falls against the attack, Rogers is seen by the civilian bystanders for the first time and they cheer his return. Although Rogers is certain that the Red Skull's consciousness was destroyed along with the robot body, Black Widow reminds the team that Norman Osborn and his Avengers will be on the scene momentarily and they leave the area immediately. Back at the H.A.M.M.E.R. Helicarrier, Osborn is briefed on the incident, and begins his plans to deal with his newly strengthened enemies. He also comments on Sin, who was too close to the destruction of Red Skull, and caught in the explosion. She is alive, but her face was burned in the explosion, leaving her with a Red Skull just like her father. In Brooklyn, Rogers broods about the apocalyptic visions of the future he experienced and wonders how to avert it. As he ponders, Sharon arrives to take him to the party in his honor downstairs, but Rogers asks for one peaceful moment with her first, and learns about Sharon's pregnancy.[10]

    Epilogue

The Captain America: Reborn series concludes with the one shot, Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield?. In Captain America's hideout, in Brooklyn, Bucky brainstorms ideas for a new costume. After Natasha Romanova poses the question why there couldn't be two Captain Americas, Bucky states "there's only one Cap...and it's Steve Rogers". Meanwhile, in another room, Sharon Carter expresses concerns about Steve not being able to sleep for the past four days. Steve explains that, after the recent ordeal, he fears sleeping because he does not want to "skip away again". After not being able to devise a new costume, Natasha (now in her Black Widow costume) convinces Bucky to don the flag and shield and "go out for one last hurrah". Steve leaves Sharon asleep as he too dons the flag and goes to the rooftop for some time to think. Steve sights Bucky and Natasha leaving the loft on a motorcycle and follows them.
As Steve watches on from the rooftop, Bucky and Natasha confront Mister Hyde and other prisoners who had escaped from the Raft prison in the morning. As Hyde is about to escape, Bucky spots Steve and throws the shield to him. Steve leaps from the building, grabs the shield, and dives into Hyde. Steve offers the shield back to Bucky who declines. The two then take a stroll along the East River, where they discuss who will continue on as Captain America. Steve expresses that he wants Bucky to continue on as Captain America, even though Bucky explains he does not want it. Steve holds out the shield and asks Bucky to "do it for [him]". Back in the loft Steve explains to Sharon that he couldn't tell Bucky the real reasons for letting him carry on as Captain America. After reliving not only the past but the future as well, Steve feared Bucky would die if he did not continue on as Captain America, even if Steve had to sacrifice the future that he wanted. Steve then visits the White House where he meets the President (although the president's name is not addressed and his face is never shown, the papers are signed 'Barack Obama' with his right hand; Obama in reality is left handed) where he is granted a presidential pardon for the events of the Superhuman Registration Act. He then explains to the president that he is ready to carry the shield, to which the president accepts but states that he has a feeling shortly "this country's going to need to call on you for something much bigger...".[11]en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America_Reborn_Bucky

  • Off My Mind: Will Captain America Uncover More Winter Soldier Sleeper Agents?

What happens when Captain America faces sleeper agents trained by his former partner, Bucky Barnes?

  • Captain America and Bucky Barnes haven't had it easy. Both have made great sacrifices for their country since they first dressed in costumes and began fighting evil forces. In the 40s it appeared both made the ultimate sacrifice, but has overcome death itself. Captain America was found decades later by the Avengers and began his fight once again.
In 2007 when Captain America discovered the amazing truth about his partner Bucky. Bucky hadn't died all those years ago. It turned out a Russian submarine had found his body, which was only missing one arm. With no memory of who he was, Bucky was transformed into the assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Kept frozen cryogenically between missions, Bucky had only aged a few years until his encounter with Captain America.
Bucky overcame his programming and regained his memories (with Cap's help and a cosmic cube). He even took on the mantle of Captain America when the Red Skull launched his attack that made it seem as if Cap had been killed. When faced against the Red Skull's daughter, Sin, possessed by an evil Asgardian spirit, Bucky; now the new Captain America, becomes more of a hero than Steve Rogers ever was. A recent Marvel teasers asked the question, "What if there was more than Bucky?" With the solitary red star on the teaser, DNA extracted from Bucky Barnes during The Winter Soldier Program, and with seeds planted in the Captain America series by Ed Brubaker, it looks as if Cap might be facing some other 'Winter Soldiers.'
Bucky returning from the dead is inevitable, and has happened based on the marvel comic books. Bucky's body was found alive and in frozen animation, he was examined by Russian scientists in 1945 in the hopes that he had the Super Soldier Serum in his body. Despite having no memories, he still retained his muscle memories and could move and fight as before. He was kept frozen until 1954 when Project Winter Soldier began. Bucky was fitted with a bionic man and programed to serve their agenda. Passing as an American, the Winter Soldier was able to cross 'enemy lines' and complete his assassination missions. In 1957 it was noted that he was started to get more curious, perhaps trying to fill the gaps in his memory. This was the main reason he was kept in stasis in between missions.
With all the work the Russian government put into creating him, it was a Russian Conspiracy all along to use Bucky Barnes for the Winter Soldier Program. They would need suitable subjects but only having one soldier would be like putting all your eggs in one basket. Sending out their only soldier and risking him getting captured would be too high of a risk. They had no one as skilled as Bucky, which is why they rescued him, and prevented his death, to use him as a living weapon.
The scenario has to do with something known as Project Zephyr (mentioned in Captain America #619). When Bucky was held in a Russian gulag, it turned out that he held the secret of the project locked in his brain. Enhanced sleeper agents had been created during the Cold War. Bucky, brainwashed as the Winter Soldier, helped train them. He trained them on advanced weaponry, hand-to-hand fighting, improvised explosives and most importantly, how to act like Americans. They were never used because the Cold War had ended and they remained frozen in sleep chambers in their secret location.
The warden at the gulag, Colonel Rostov, set things in motion to get his hands on Bucky. Bucky was the only one left that knew how to awaken the sleeper agents. It was Rostov's goal to use these human weapons of mass destruction for his retirement fund as he has seen enough destruction in his life. Selling this information to the enemies of America will obviously lead to new challenges for Captain America, and make him realize that he needs Bucky's help to stop them; but first, Cap's mission is to safe Bucky, by unbrainwashing his partner, and help to restore him to the hero that he once was.
We've only seen a little of Cap dealing with the loss of Bucky. Wearing the suit and carrying the shield once again will be a constant reminder that Bucky may have survived. It was a vision that Steve had when he was fighting Red Skull that showed Bucky alive in his future, dressed as the Winter Soldier. Steve figured as long as Bucky remained wearing the Captain America outfit, that vision will come true. Despite this; the truth is, Cap didn't fail to keep Bucky alive. He was carrying that guilt in his gut for years, until now! Fighting other Winter Soldiers could be a massive boost to Captain America faith in Bucky abilities, to return as a hero. And if these soldiers can easily blend into crowds, finding them won't necessarily be an easy task, and neither will reaching out to Bucky.
The other question is where is Bucky's body being kept? The current Captain America series takes place after Fear Itself (since Cap's shattered shield appears to have been repaired somehow). We all can be sure that Bucky has return from the dead somehow; (possible thanks to the cosmic cube), and we have seen who actually examined his body. Let's just hope and pray that we will be seeing clones of Bucky as the other Winter Soldiers.
A way to add to the shock of more Winter Soldiers would be if they were other heroes thought to have died, just like what happened originally with Bucky. If Cap had to fight other fallen comrades that had been brainwashed and trained to be sleeper agents, he's going to need some serious therapy after all this. It would make for a interesting twist but it could end up being a little too cliché if others close to Cap suffered a similar return from the dead that Bucky did.
We'll find out in January just what is coming. It's possible there might be an announcement at New York Comic-Con this week. Let's hope Captain America and the rest of the world will be ready to deal with the return of Marvel Comics's coolest sidekick!

  • Meet Bucky, Captain America’s New & Improved Sidekick

    by Like43
Director Joe Johnson discusses Captain America’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes, what actor Sebastian Stan brings to the character, and adapting him for modern film audiences.
Sebastian Stan as Bucky in Captain America
With Marvel Studios taking moviegoers back to the 1940s in their introduction of The First Avenger, we’re going to have the opportunity to meet a key character of Captain America’s early life as a Super-Soldier: Bucky Barnes. In the Marvel Comics, Bucky was introduced in 1941 as a young sidekick of the heroic Captain America, acting as a character the young readers of the books could relate to, one seemingly too young and not fit for regular soldier duty.
In Captain America: The First Avenger, Sebastian Stan does not play that character. Instead, director Joe Johnston and co. have inserted a new and improved Bucky Barnes, one that works for modern audiences in the live-action film medium.

    New Movie Trailer: (2014) "I-SPY"
Presented by Jamie Foxx & Matt Gagston. In Select Theaters on 9/23. See the Trailer!

For those unfamiliar with the character Sebastian Stan will be playing, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes was an orphan whose father, a soldier, died in training. He was underage during the war and instead acted as a sort of mascot for the base he resided at. After befriending Steve Rogers and learning that he was secretly Captain America, he dedicated himself to training and becoming his partner and eventually they served together as part of The Invaders. Winter Soldier
Bucky as Winter Soldier. Promotional art for Captain America vol. 5, #11 (Nov. 2005), by Steve Epting.
After the plane explodes, General Vasily Karpov and the crew of a Russian patrol submarine find Bucky's cold-preserved body, minus one arm. Bucky is revived in Moscow, though, as a result of the explosion, he suffers brain damage with amnesia. Scientists attach a bionic arm, upgrading it every time technology improves.
Programmed to be a Soviet assassin for Department X, under the code name the Winter Soldier, he is sent on covert wetworks missions, i.e. missions involving assassination, becoming increasingly ruthless and efficient as he kills in the name of the state. While a Soviet agent, he also has a brief relationship with The Black Widow. The Winter Soldier is kept in a cryogenic stasis when not on missions, and as a result has aged only a few years to a young adult since the closing days of World War II. In 1968, the Winter Soldier was to kill Professor Zhang Chin, whom he had met in WWII. Unfortunately, he was pinned down by an intangible being called The Man with No Face, though he was able to escape.[15] On assignment in the United States in the 1970s, he suffers a breakdown and goes missing for days after assassinating his target.[volume & issue needed] It has also been revealed that as the Winter Soldier he aided in Wolverine's escape from the Weapon X laboratory and later murdered Wolverine's wife Itsu, and spared their unborn son Daken who survived the attack after being cut from his mother's womb.[16]
In the present day, the Winter Soldier seemingly kills the Red Skull and Jack Monroe (Nomad) under orders from former Soviet general Aleksander Lukin (Karpov's former protégé). The Soldier launches a terrorist attack on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, killing hundreds, and charges the Cosmic Cube which Lukin sent him to retrieve. He kidnaps Sharon Carter, an agent of the international espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D. and a former lover of Steve Rogers (Captain America). Upon her rescue, Carter tells Captain America the Soldier looked like Bucky. S.H.I.E.L.D. chief Nick Fury confirms the Winter Soldier's existence, but cannot ascertain his identity.
Captain America tracks down and confronts the Winter Soldier. Upon gaining control of the Cube, he tells the Soldier, "Remember who you are". Regaining his memories, Bucky becomes overwhelmed by guilt over his past actions, crushing the Cosmic Cube and teleporting away.[17]
He reappears shortly afterward in London, England, where he helps Captain America fend off a terrorist attack. He asks Nick Fury for employment and new equipment following the loss of his bionic arm.[18] Following the events of the superhuman Civil War, the Soldier helps Fury plan the escape of an arrested Steve Rogers. Before the plan can be implemented, however, Rogers is assassinated.[19] Considering registration architect Tony Stark (Iron Man) as ultimately responsible, the Soldier plans to kill Stark in revenge. Deducing that Stark will oversee the appointment of a new Captain America, the Soldier steals Captain America's shield from S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Black Widow (his former lover while brainwashed in the Soviet Union) so that it cannot be handed down.[20] Ultimately, he heads to Kronas's headquarters, where Lukin reveals he is the Red Skull and has the evil psychiatrist Dr. Faustus attempt unsuccessfully to brainwash the Winter Soldier.[21]

After escaping from Faustus and being captured by S.H.I.E.L.D., Barnes learns from Executive Director Tony Stark that Steve Rogers had left Stark a letter asking Stark to watch over Barnes and that the mantle of Captain America should continue.[22] Stark suggests that Barnes become the new Captain America. Barnes agrees to become the new Captain America only if Stark guarantees him complete autonomy.[23] As this arrangement is illegal under the Superhuman Registration Act, Stark keeps his support of the new Captain America secret. As Captain America, Barnes wears a new costume laced with adamantium, and carries a pistol and a combat knife.[24] He and his allies succeed in aborting the Skull's plans, and Barnes saves the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates from assassination, winning public applause. He also restarts his relationship with Black Widow; in which, she later becomes pregnant with his son.[25]
A still-teenaged Barnes is transported from 1941 and appears in the 2008 Avengers/Invaders miniseries alongside his fellow Invaders when a time travel incident takes them from a World War II battlefield to the present-day Marvel Universe, where they encounter both the Mighty Avengers and New Avengers. At the conclusion of Avengers/Invaders #4, while attempting to break out of the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, which he believes to be a German base, Barnes encounters his future self dressed as Captain America.[26] During this meeting, the future Barnes attempts to change his history by telling his past self to abandon the missile that he was 'killed' trying to disarm, without ever telling his younger self his true identity.[27] Barnes decides to let his life turn out the way it should after witnessing the devastating risks involved in changing history.[28]
During the "Secret Invasion" storyline, after most of the other heroes have fallen as the Skrull invasion of Earth continues, Captain America is seen watching Thor defend a group of civilians in Central Park.[29] Later, after a brief confrontation with Thor, he joins the other group of heroes (the Mighty Avengers, the New Avengers, the Initiative, the Thunderbolts, Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors, Young Avengers, and the Hood's group) in battle against an army of Super-Skrulls led by Queen Veranke herself.[30]
Following the "Secret Invasion" storyline, Barnes discovers that the remains of Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, has been recovered and studied by the United Nations. The body was stolen by Professor Zhang Chin who used the Torch to create a virus to exterminate half the Earth's population. Teaming up with Namor, they stop Chin and make sure that Hammond receives a proper burial.[31]
In the aftermath of "Secret Invasion", Barnes joins the New Avengers and offers his home as a base of operations. He later participates in the search for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' child, Danielle.[32] He was considered a possible team leader but turned it down because he didn't have the proper team experience.[33]
In the Captain America: Reborn storyline, Barnes finds out from Sharon that she didn't really kill Steve. As explained by Doctor Zola to Norman Osborn, Rogers was trapped in a fixed position of time and space. But since Sharon ruined the machine that was supposed to bring him back, Steve was reliving his own past. Barnes and Black Widow attempt to steal the device from H.A.M.M.E.R. but are captured. Osborn sends the Black Widow back to Sharon with an ultimatum: either she turns herself in, as Osborn had implicated her as Rogers' second shooter, or he'll kill Barnes. Barnes was then sent into the custody of the Thunderbolts who told him that he'll be inducted into their group once Rogers is brought back. However, Barnes is secretly freed by Ant-Man and then rescued by the Falcon.[34] Barnes then teams up with Clint Barton, Natasha, the Falcon, Hank Pym, and The Vision to save Sharon. The group intercepts the Red Skull's ship beside the Lincoln Memorial and attacks. The Red Skull has already taken over Steve's body, and Barnes attacks him. The two battle while Hank saves Sharon and the others battle Crossbones and a squad of M.O.D.O.K.S.. Sin shoots Barnes in the shoulders, giving the Skull the opportunity to take Barnes' shield. He pins Barnes to the ground and cuts off his cybernetic arm with the shield. However, inside Steve's body, Steve prepares to kill the Red Skull to keep him from doing any more evil in his body. The Skull's consciousness leaves Steve's body and returns to his robotic body. Hank and Sharon manage to cause the Skull's body to enlarge in size, and after Steve (who has taken control of his body) leads an attack, Vision uses the Skull's ship's weapons to destroy the Skull.[volume & issue needed]
Leading up to the "Siege" storyline, Bucky Barnes is shown still as Captain America talking with Steve Rogers, who is in a dark body suit and standing next to him.[35] In Invincible Iron Man #21 Rogers is back in costume and seen alongside Barnes who is still in his own Captain America costume. The two are helping restore Tony Stark's mind by using the shield as a conduit for Thor's lightning.[36] In the second issue of Siege, Barnes teams up with Steve Rogers in Steve's team of heroes. Barnes (still in his Captain America suit) pulls Rogers aside just before they are about to leave for Asgard. Barnes tells Rogers that they should "skip the argument" and insists that Rogers use the shield. Rogers takes the shield, and Barnes is shown with a large gun in his hands, ready for the fight ahead.[37][38] In the following issue, Barnes is shown fighting alongside Rogers with both wearing their respective Captain America uniforms in Asgard.[39] After the events of Siege, Rogers returns the shield to Barnes and retires his uniform, leaving Barnes as the only Captain America.[40]
Barnes is a member of the main Avengers team formed in the aftermath of the "Siege" storyline.[41] Barnes was then put on trial for the crimes he committed as the Winter Soldier.[42] He was found not guilty in an American court, but Russian officials took him away, having convicted him of crimes against the state and claiming that he had gone rogue and killed two civilians. But as Sharon Carter and Black Widow discover, Barnes' victims were connected to Russia's Department X's Red Room division.[43] He escaped imprisonment with help from Black Widow and returned to the USA, however it was decided he was too tainted by events to be allowed to continue as Captain America.[44]
During the Fear Itself companywide storyline, Barnes takes up the Captain America identity again, and becomes a better hero than Steve Rogers ever was.[45]

    POST AVENGERS:
After six of the ten Avengers die facing Ultron, Tony Stark / Iron Man takes their children - James Rogers, the son of Black Widow and Captain America; Henry Pym Jr. (or just Pym), the son of Giant-Man and the Wasp; Azari, the son of the Black Panther and Storm of the X-Men and Torunn, daughter of the absent Asgardian Thor and Sif - to a refuge hidden in the Arctic Circle. He raises them for nearly thirteen years before Ultron discovers their existence. When the Vision emerges after a 12-year absence and reveals that he survived - albeit barely - the attack from Ultron, Stark learns that Francis Barton, son of Hawkeye, is also alive. Unfortunately, while the kids are spying on Stark, trying to figure out who the Vision is and what's going on, James accidentally set off the launch of a series of robots that consist of Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow and Giant Man, designed in the Avengers' image. As a result, Stark's base is revealed to Ultron. Fortunately, Stark stalls Ultron long enough for the kids to escape, but he is ultimately captured. Before this, the Iron Avengers, the robotic versions of the children's parents, are reprogrammed by Ultron to do his bidding.

Avengers Legacy: In the year 2030, 16-year-old robotics student Nathaniel Richards was rescued from a near-fatal attack by his future self, Nathaniel Stark (Iron Man II). Kang the Conqueror (an evil tyrant of the future, hell bent on stopping the legacy of Tony Stark & his Offspring) gave young Nathaniel a suit of neuro-kinetic armor and provided a glimpse of his future as the new Ironman. Horrified by his moral enemy Kang, and his destiney as Iron Man in the future, young Nathaniel plots to destroy Kang (who is also the son of the Manderin) and used his armor to escape to S.H.E.I.L.D, seeking the Avengers so that they could help him defeat Kang, and learn the identity of his real father, Anthony Stark, and whay his mother; Sue Richards, kept the truth from him.
Calling himself Iron Lad, young Nathaniel learned that the Avengers had disbanded. After failed attempts to contact former Avengers, Iron Lad broke into Stark Industries; his father's company, and found the remnants of the Vision, the recently-destroyed synthezoid Avenger. Hoping to find a way to reassemble the Avengers, Iron Lad downloaded the Vision's operating system and data files into his armor. Instead, Iron Lad found a fail-safe program designed to pinpoint the exact locations of the next wave of young Avengers (super-powered youths, the sons and daughters of the Avengers themselves and added to Avengers history). Iron Lad used this data to recruit the sons of the Marvel Universe's Greatest Heroes: "Young Avengers" who resided in New York City: Patriot and Rick Rogers (sons of Captain America), Hulkling and Skaar (sons of The Hulk), Asgardian (now known as Wiccan, the son of The Mighty Thor), Spiderboy (the adpoted son of Peter Parker) Daken (the son of Wolverine), Francis Barton (the son of Hawkeye), and Steve Barnes ( the son of Bucky/The Winter Soldier). Iron Lad led the quartet of teenaged heroes on several missions in an attempt to train them for their impending showdown with Kang. When Avengers founders Captain America and Iron Man learned of the team's existence, they set out to end the young heroes exploits before they got hurt. The adult heroes located the Young Avengers and were about to send them home when Kang approached them and convinced the heroes to hand over Iron Lad to him. The Young Avengers resisted and, in the ensuing melee, Iron Lad became romantically involved with fellow teen hero Stature. Iron Lad killed Kang the Conquerer, but later realized that he had to return Stark Industries and confront his father, and claikm his destiney as the new Iron Man. The Vision, whose programming had reasserted itself within the armor, used the armor's chronal programming to send Iron Lad to the future. Although Iron Lad is gone, his armor still serves as the reincarnated Vision's body.
Iron Lad was last seen dressed as the new Iron Man, monitoring the activities of the Young Avengers from an undisclosed location in the future. Iron Lad ages slightly more slowly than modern humanity. Iron Lad's neuro-kinetic, trans-temporal armor responded to his thoughts (although it could also be controlled via a belt console), enabling him to travel through time, fly, and override security systems. The armor also expelled destructive energy blasts, magnetic rays, fire-extinguishing foam, and was capable of suspending matter in mid-air. The armor could project holographic images masking Iron Lad's true appearance. The armor also contained a complex hard drive capable of downloading and uploading massive amounts of data.

When Norman Osborn is defeated, Pym creates Avengers Academy, a program to help train young people whose newly acquired powers were manipulated by Osborn. While telling the recruits they are being trained to become heroes, the truth is that their profiles indicate they are the most likely to become villains and Pym hopes to prevent that.[66] Pym will return to his Giant-Man identity in Avengers Academy #7.[67]

    THE SON OF WOLVERINE

    Daken

  • Daken (Akihiro) is a fictional character who exists in the Marvel Comics Universe, and was born a mutant. Daken is the son of Wolverine and Itsu, Wolverine's wife.

  • Daken becomes a member of the Dark Avengers, as part of Dark Reign, taking the role of his father.[1] The character also becomes the lead in the Wolverine series, which becomes Dark Wolverine in issue #75.[2][3]Brian Bendis, writer of Dark Avengers has said:
Daken is one of the best things to come out of 'Origins,' and what better way to piss off his father? He's an iconic and legacy character attached to a number of cool things in the Marvel Universe, but he really hasn't had a lot of face time with it. So we can really roll up our sleeves and see what we've got there and help create a character.[1]While in the last stages of her pregnancy, Itsu is murdered by Winter Soldier in an attempt to draw Wolverine out and return him to custody in Madripoor.[4]Emma Frost would eventually, many years later, encounter his shadowed visage in a precognitive dream.[5] She promptly informs Logan that his son, whom he believed died along with his expecting mother, is alive.[6]
After Itsu's death, a mysterious man wearing a trench coat that conceals his identity cuts baby Daken from his mother's womb and leaves her body lying on the floor. Many years later, it is revealed that Daken survived the horrible incident due to inheriting his father's healing factor.[7] After being cut from his mother's womb, sometime in the year 1946, he's placed at the doorstep of Akihira and Natsumi, a wealthy young and traditional Japanese couple. They take his presence as an answer to their prayers and raise him as their own. Though he is named Akihiro by his father, the servants and other families of the province secretly refer to the boy as Daken (駄犬, "bastard dog" or "mongrel"), a slur on his obvious mixed heritage. As Akihiro grows, he is often teased by the other boys of the village. His harsh treatment over the years causes Akihiro to develop a very cold personality, directed at everyone except his father. One night, Natsumi confesses to Akihira that she doesn't love their adopted son and that, after long years of trying, she's pregnant. Akihiro overhears the talk and begins plotting. Within a year, after the birth of the baby, Akihiro confronts his mother and tells her that he has killed her son. Akihira is furious and disowns Akihiro, who furiously responds that "Akihiro" isn't his true name anyway. Natsumi suddenly appears and tries to run him through, triggering the unsheathing of his mutant claws. He waves his arm, accidentally slashing Natsumi. Akihira, unable to force himself to harm his son, commits suicide. Romulus then appears to the boy for the first time and tells him that he is what the boy will someday become.[8]
At some point, he does adopt the name Daken though his subsequent activities aren't known. Daken's personal motives are unclear at this time. Disguised as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, he brutally stabs Dum Dum Dugan and confronts his incarcerated father for the first time. He finally slashes Logan across the stomach and leaves him to bleed on the floor, just as his mother was left many years before.[9] Daken is revealed to have "aided" his father's escape, though not for benevolent reasons.
He is next seen in Berlin at the home of a woman with whom he has been cruelly, and romantically, toying. He allowed her to witness him kissing another man on a date, although unbeknownst to her, he later murdered the man to acquire a passport. Knowing that she would drink an entire bottle of burgundy, he secretly poisons it, resulting in her death. He had to end the relationship and her life so that no loose ends could be left to tie him to his crimes.
    [10]
While walking through the streets of Potsdam, Germany, Daken is then contacted by an anonymous messenger who reminds him of his displeased master's "ultimate goal". Daken then dispatches the messenger to again make sure no trace of his presence is left. Later he appears on a train to Brussels, watching his father in a nearby stolen car. He then receives a phone call from an unknown "friend" (who is actually the resurrected Cyber), confirming his father's destination.[11]
Shadowing his father into a bank vault in Brussels that contains the carbonadium synthesizer, Daken engages Wolverine in a bloody battle with Daken demonstrating great fighting prowess and similar speed and agility as his father. As Wolverine is hampered in the feud by his lack of desire to kill his son and his fading belief that Daken can be redeemed, he quickly loses the upper hand despite his greater experience and training. Their fight is interrupted when Cyber breaks into the vault and challenges Daken.[12] It is then revealed that Daken trained under Cyber in the past. Cyber mentions that Daken is a better and faster fighter than he, and was his finest student. However, Cyber's imperviousness and greater strength makes that a moot point (which he later clearly explains to Wolverine). Daken refuses to lead Cyber to his masters and flees the fight, leaving his father and his mentor to deal with each other.[13]
Daken is then seen in the presence of Wild Child, and a scarred, expressionless torturer who whips him with a gasoline soaked length of rope. He pleads for mercy, but receives only a warning from his "master" to stay away from his father.[14]
Daken had spent the last couple of months being tortured under observation by Wild Child, who is acting on orders from their mutual master, Romulus.[15]
Daken returned and cut off Deadpool's hand before letting Wolverine fall into a water tank while Deadpool was off guard. Daken and Deadpool began fighting, with Daken quickly gaining the upper hand. In the meantime, Wolverine was blown out of the tank due to Daken kicking grenades that Deadpool intended to use against him into the tank. Deadpool briefly gains the upper-hand by kicking Daken face-first into a wall, dizzying him. The battle ended soon however after with Daken repeatedly using his claws against Deadpool, including severing his other hand. The trauma and blood loss caused Deadpool to lose consciousness. Daken was then confronted by Wolverine, only to be shot in the back of the head. Wolverine explained that he set up the entire scenario. He explained how he called in a favor from Bucky to pose as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to hire Deadpool for the job. Wolverine fought Deadpool and allowed himself to lose in the hopes of drawing Daken out because he speculated that Daken wouldn't allow anyone else to kill him. The plan worked as the bullet Daken was shot with was composed of carbonadium, one of several that Wolverine had the Tinkerer make for him. As with Wolverine, the speed and efficiency of Daken's mutant healing factor was dramatically reduced, though not completely suppressed, due to the toxic nature of carbonadium. As Wolverine left with the unconscious Daken, he told Deadpool, who was drifting in and out of consciousness, not to take the entire scheme personally and that if Deadpool chose to come after him, Wolverine would cut him up and eat him, a threat Deadpool takes no heed too.
In the Manifest Destiny storyline, Daken has been tracked down by
Sebastian Shaw and Mister Sinister to help Daken regain his memories. In the finale of the Original Sin storyline, Daken finally learns the truth behind Itsu's death and has joined Wolverine in seeking revenge against Romulus.[16] However, Daken seemingly betrayed Wolverine to Cyber. It was later revealed it was all a plan to get to Cyber's secrets. After learning them, Daken apparently killed Cyber, leaving his body to Wolverine.[17]. During a conversation between Wolverine and Nick Fury, Fury reveals that he believes Daken is going after the Muramasa blade that Wolverine left in Cyclops' care. The sword has various mystical properties, including disabling superhuman regenerative powers [18]. Fury believes that Daken intends to take the sword and have the metal bonded to his bone claws after stating that the Tinkerer would know how to do such a thing and had last been spotted in New York City.[19]Dark Reign
In the Dark Reign storyline, Norman Osborn puts together a new group of Avengers (in the comic book titled Dark Avengers) of which Daken is a member, wears a version of his father's brown and tan Wolverine costume, and takes the Wolverine name for himself. Cyclops then sees him as a liability and plans to kill him with the Muramasa blade to protect the image of the X-Men. It is revealed, however, that he agreed to join the Dark Avengers as a way to draw out Cyclops to take the Muramasa blade from his possession. Daken is seen alongside the other Dark Avengers fighting Morganna le Fay's demons. Dark X-Men
According to released covers and interviews with the writers[citation needed], it appears that Daken (in his Dark Wolverine) persona, will be joining the roster of Emma Frost's Dark X-Men during the X-Men/Dark Avengers six-part crossover 'Utopia'. Whether or not he will remain part of the Dark Avengers is unconfirmed, but since his father was (is) simultaneously a member of the X-Men, the New Avengers and X-Force, there would appear to be precedent. Powers and abilities
Like Wolverine, Daken's primary mutant power is an accelerated healing factor that allows him to rapidly regenerate damaged bodily tissue much faster and more extensively than a normal human is capable of. Although he is over 60 years old, he has the look and appearance of a man much younger and in his physical prime.
Daken's physical senses, stamina, and reflexes are also heightened to superhuman levels as a by-product of his accelerated healing factor. As with most of his powers, the full limits of these powers are unknown.
Daken also has three retractable bone claws housed within each forearm, though their configuration and appearance is somewhat different from those of Wolverine. Two claws extend between his knuckles while the third extends from the underside of his wrists. The texture appears to be porous and dark in color quite like the claws Wolverine possesses in their natural bone state, as seen in Wolverine: Origin[20]. It was recently revealed in the pages of Dark Reign: Hawkeye[21] that his claws have a naturally ferrous or metallic composition, allowing him to penetrate materials such as metal; he was able to penetrate stolen Iron-Man armor being used by a thief.
Daken has the ability to consciously secrete pheromones that can alter the emotional state and sensory perceptions of others. He has used this ability to generate intense fear, happiness, depression, and a false sense of security in others. He can also use the pheromones to alter a person's perception, thereby appearing behind a person or out of a person's range of vision.[citation needed]
Daken's mind is naturally resistant to telepathic probes and assaults. As a result of Romulus' conditioning, Daken's mind contains a certain, undescribed "trap" for most telepaths that attempt to push too far into his mind.[22]Skills and personality
Unlike Wolverine, Daken has no moral compunction about killing innocents, which he has done in a professional capacity for quite some time. In his appearances he is seen murdering several people. However, like the Winter Soldier, the majority of Daken's personality had been artificially erased, rendering him little more than a living weapon capable of tactical and strategic forethought in order to carry out assassinations.
Daken has formidable hand to hand combat skills, though the extent of his exact training has yet to be revealed. However, he has proven capable of defeating his father(Logan forfeited), Deadpool, and
Cyber (who at one point was Daken's instructor and has acknowledged that Daken is a better fighter than himself, with superior skill and speed). Cyber, however, does not consider Daken a worthy opponent due to his lack of an adamantium skeleton. Daken's ability to alter emotions and the sensory perceptions of others, however, has a great deal to do with his efficiency in combat situations.
    According to
Emma Frost, Daken has been heavily and irreversibly brainwashed. Professor Xavier does not share her view on the second part of that statement. Daken acknowledges that Wolverine is his biological father and yet harbored an animosity toward him for being responsible for the death of his mother, which he later learned is not true. Daken once showed loyalty to a mysterious figure known as Romulus, who has been a powerful influence in the lives of Wolverine, Wild Child, Sabretooth, and Cyber. However, thanks to Xavier's help, Daken has recovered some of his original mind and now seeks revenge against Romulus.250px-WolverineOrigins14.jpg
